Position Overview:
WFMZ is seeking a dynamic, creative, and experienced Assistant News Director to help lead one of the most respected newsrooms in the region. You’ll work closely with the News Director to manage day-to-day newsroom operations, mentor staff, shape editorial content, and ensure we consistently deliver compelling, accurate, and impactful news across all platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
Support the News Director in leading newsroom staff, including anchors, reporters, producers, photographers, and editors.
Oversee editorial meetings, assign stories, and ensure coverage reflects the diverse communities we serve.
Guide and approve daily story selection, scriptwriting, and presentation for all newscasts.
Collaborate with digital, weather, and sports teams to create seamless multiplatform content.
Provide regular coaching and feedback to help team members grow.
Step into leadership during breaking news, special coverage, and newsroom emergencies.
Assist in hiring and training new staff.
Maintain editorial standards and ensure compliance with journalistic ethics, FCC rules, and company policies.

Job Requirements
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
Newsroom management or senior producing experience preferred.
Strong news judgment, organizational skills, and leadership abilities.
Proven track record of innovation and audience growth across linear and digital.
Ability to manage multiple projects under deadline pressure.
Experience with ENPS, Outlook, and Teams is a plus.
