Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW:
 
The Production Assistant (PA), Digital Video, is responsible for managing and publishing all broadcast media to the PBS NewsHour website each evening. In addition, the PA assists with digital-first video production, livestreaming, and clipping major news events. The PA exercises independent judgment and collaborates with senior digital and editorial newsroom leadership, as well as other members of the PBS News organization, to coordinate the many production elements involved in publishing a daily news program online.
 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  • Edit, encode, and optimize PBS NewsHour’s broadcast and segments for digital platforms using Premiere and other editing programs
  • Post videos to the PBS video player, YouTube, and other assigned platforms, and make edits to published digital videos as needed.
  • Digitize and post audio podcasts of the nightly NewsHour broadcast
  • Livestream breaking news video on NewsHour’s social media platforms
  • Edit extended interviews, news clips, and other video projects as assigned
  • Research and assist with implementation of tech and workflow solutions. 
  • Assist digital and broadcast producers as assigned.
  • Perform related special projects or other duties as assigned.
 
CORE COMPETENCIES: 
 
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced newsroom environment and adapt smoothly to changing assignments under deadline pressure.
  • Multimedia production skills and experience with Premiere or other digital video editing platforms.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of digital video production technology and camera gear.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including strong spelling and grammar, with demonstrated writing ability and careful attention to detail.
  • Strong familiarity and curiosity about production workflows and streamlining.
  • Excellent organizational, project planning, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work closely with colleagues in a collaborative manner during high stress situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a wide variety of people using diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
  • Demonstrated interest in digital video storytelling, social media platforms, and daily journalism, along with a basic working knowledge of and interest in current events, major governmental and political institutions, foreign affairs, and related topics.
  • Ability to work an afternoon to evening schedule and flexibility to work extended or shifted hour when needed.
 
 
ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Introductory experience with broadcast and digital journalism, including written, reporting, and video production.
  • Nonlinear editing experience required.
  • Camera skills are a big plus.
  • Web production and video encoding skills desired.
 
 
EDUCATION:
 
  • BA/BS (4-Year College / University Degree)
 
LOCATION:
 
WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
