KERA, the public media organization for North Texas, is hiring an Afternoon Newscaster/Producer to take over one of our station’s most visible and influential radio on-air roles.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Afternoon Newscaster/Producer plays a critical role in planning, producing and delivering reliable, in-the-moment news to KERA’s audiences each afternoon.
The ideal candidate works rapidly under tight deadlines to produce accurate reporting both collaboratively with staff and independently, with a conversational but professional on-air delivery. This person is a strong producer with excellent news judgement and the ability to quickly write, edit and deliver news copy over the airwaves and on our digital platforms to reach a dynamic and diverse community.
This position is an FLSA classified non-exempt position, is eligible for overtime, and reports directly to the Managing Editor, KERA News
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Write, edit, produce and deliver live newscasts in the afternoon and evening hours, under strict deadlines
Work with reporters and the Managing Editor to plan news coverage, live two-ways, live segments and copy for digital and/or social media platforms
Work collaboratively across teams, including with the Managing Producer of our upcoming morning local show.
Identify, research, pitch, write, reports, edit and voices a wide variety of spots and two-ways for morning and afternoon news magazines, talk shows, statewide networks and national programs (as appropriate).
Anticipate and respond to breaking news and plays a critical editorial role in dynamic breaking news situations
Collaborate internally across teams and with external partners, such as The Texas Newsroom, Fort Worth Report and Dallas Morning News.
Represent KERA and KERA news in the community and at events
Participate in on-air and online fundraising as needed and assigned

Three years of experience in a public media or news organization.
Aggressive, enthusiastic, and self-motivated approach to daily and breaking news.
Ability to report through long-form, innovative storytelling.
Excellent writing and organizational skills, proven news judgment, and journalistic integrity.
Experience producing content conforming to AP style for the web and social media platforms.
Ability to multitask and work on diverse projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
Demonstrated ability to take direction and work independently as well as collaboratively with various personalities.
Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule.
Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment.
Knowledge of North Texas area and the issues facing the state of Texas are a plus, but not a requirement.
SALARY RANGE $60,000-$70,000 annually depending on experience

LOCATION: We expect that this position will work out of our Dallas office at least 95% of the time. (Equivalant to 38 hours per week) Time in office requirements are subject to change based on the needs of KERA and/or the position.
