Position
The Executive Editor is responsible for leading, along with the Editor-in-Chief, Jewish Currents’ editorial work. That includes commissioning and editing, serving as top editor or final reader for various kinds of pieces, editing particularly complex or lengthy reported features or essays, mentoring less experienced editors, supervising staff, and helping to shape the editorial strategy and vision for the magazine. The Executive Editor should be comfortable editing various kinds of pieces, from lyrical essays to short news and analysis to conversations to reviews.

Founded in 1946, Jewish Currents is a magazine committed to the rich tradition of thought, activism, and culture on the Jewish left and the left more broadly. We cover a wide variety of topics, including the uses and misuses of antisemitism, the inner workings of Jewish communal organizations, Israel/Palestine politics on the ground and internationally, race and racialization, strategies and horizons of American left movements, the global rise of the far right, diasporic cultural expression, labor, climate, incarceration, immigration, and feminism.

Location and Team Structure
This position will be part of the editorial management team, with a preference for candidates based in New York City. The position is currently primarily remote, with the plan of moving to a hybrid-style office in 2026.
Compensation
The compensation for this position is $90,000 – $100,000 depending on experience. We offer a competitive benefits package, including:

15-25 paid vacation days per year, depending on years of service
Paid sabbatical after 5 years
Two weeklong paid breaks (August and December)
Jewish Currents is under contract with the WGAE. The Executive Editor is an excluded position.

Responsibilities
Commissioning articles for both web and print
Editing pieces for web and print with an emphasis on long-form features
Troubleshooting difficult pieces and supervising editorial staff
Working with the rest of the management team to manage workflow, address organizational challenges, and ensure a healthy workplace culture
Qualifications
5+ years of editing experience
Experience reporting or editing reported work, especially long-form reported features
Experience supporting or supervising staff
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Attention to detail on the page
Strong initiative and comfort with self-direction
Ability to multitask and to thrive in fast-paced environments with shifting tasks and priorities
Knowledge of our beats, be it (Jewish) art and culture; left politics; or Israel/Palestine
