Job Description

Join States Newsroom and give readers hard-hitting coverage of technology, cybersecurity, AI and policy – that they can understand

Stunning advances in artificial intelligence and technology broadly directly affect people’s lives and reshape our communities, yet most current coverage of the tech sector and generative AI appears primarily in industry publications, never reaching state policymakers, much less everyday readers across a broad swath of the country.

States Newsroom, the nation’s largest state-focused nonprofit news organization, would like to change that. We are looking for a national technology reporter to cover important developments and trends in the technology industry and policy arena and translate those complicated topics into language that people who aren’t tech-savvy can understand.

We want someone interested in helping people understand how technology shapes their everyday lives, from the phones they use to their children’s mental health, as well as how the tech sector is shaped by government actions and interested parties across the nation. If you’re fascinated by technology, thrive in a collaborative culture, possess great news judgment, and want to demystify complex topics through compelling, engaging work, this is the job for you.

This remote reporter’s work will be featured on News from the States as well as on the 39 state news sites we publish. Last year, States Newsroom stories were viewed more than 150 million times and reprinted almost 100,000 times across the country in rural and urban publications. We are excited to offer high-quality tech reporting to the large and growing audiences of our sites, our republishing partners, and readers of our state and national newsletters.

States Newsroom’s national tech reporter will be uniquely positioned to expand coverage of AI, broadband access, online privacy and cybersecurity and further the public’s understanding of what’s at stake in the debate about artificial intelligence and our technological future.

This grant-funded position is supported through June 30, 2025, with possibility of renewal.

  • Pursue story leads with strong self-direction and news judgment
  • Approach assignments on deadline with strong communication and follow through with the editor and colleagues
  • Use social media to amplify network content
  • This role may require travel

BENEFITS & COMPENSATION

The minimum salary for this position is $85,000 and rises with experience. Our generous benefits package includes:
