Job Description

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is a nonpartisan research and policy institute that advances federal and state policies to help build a nation where everyone — regardless of income, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ZIP code, immigration status, or disability status — has the resources they need to thrive and share in the nation’s prosperity.

CBPP combines rigorous research and analysis, strategic communications, and effective advocacy to shape debates, affect policy, and inform effective implementation both nationally and in states. It works closely with a broad set of national, state, and community organizations to design and advance policies that promote economic justice; improve health; broaden opportunity in areas like housing, health care, employment, and education; and lower structural barriers for people of color and others in communities that continue to face systemic barriers to opportunity. CBPP promotes policies that will build a more equitable nation and fair tax policies that can support these gains over the long term. CBPP also shows the harmful impacts of policies and proposals that would deepen poverty, widen inequities, and worsen health outcomes.

CBPP seeks a Senior Editor to collaborate with policy experts to produce written products that advance the Center’s policy goals. The Senior Editor will work closely with policy staff to distill complex concepts into clear, compelling language and visuals for papers, blog posts, statements, and other documents, ranging from restructuring content to line editing and copy editing. The Senior Editor will also manage projects for publication, coordinating project timelines as well as contributions and review by policy and research staff, Communications team members, and others within the organization. With other members of the editorial team, the Senior Editor will support CBPP’s efforts to center and advance equity, inclusion, and justice in our written products.

The Senior Editor role offers an opportunity for a talented communications professional to contribute to products that shape the news and public debate and advance policies that build opportunity, promote equity, and reduce poverty. The ideal candidate will have excellent written communication and project management skills, understanding of domestic policy, experience communicating about intersectional issues of identity and public policy as well as the impact of structural racism and other inequities, and enthusiasm for working to advance CBPP’s mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit policy analyses, statements, blog posts, other documents, and graphics for structure, content, and language to make them more accessible and effective for an array of key audiences, including federal and state policymakers, opinion leaders, media, partners, and the general public.
  • Work closely with a wide range of internal clients, including CBPP’s leadership, policy analysts, and Communications team colleagues, to shape and prepare material for dissemination. This includes managing the production and review timelines for complex research and analysis projects, sometimes involving multiple products or policy departments, and keeping internal stakeholders informed.
  • Collaborate with other Communications colleagues and policy and research staff to support CBPP’s efforts to center and advance equity, inclusion, and justice in our products, including through regular updates to CBPP’s in-house style guide and other internal resources.
  • Keep abreast of CBPP’s messaging, policy, and legislative and administrative goals and support their integration in the Center’s content.
  • Participate in CBPP activities and events to support staff learning and development, information sharing, and community building; proactively build cross-organizational relationships; and contribute meaningfully to a work environment that centers equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree, or at least four years of equivalent relevant experience, and at least seven years of relevant experience in writing or editing in a deadline-based environment focused on government or policy.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, leadership, and project management skills, including organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • A proven track record of producing outstanding written work — from original writing or editing — often on tight timelines, and an ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A demonstrated understanding of racial equity, structural racism, and other systemic inequities and a commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and justice through the Center’s communications work.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to share and receive feedback constructively.
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to collaborating with colleagues and contributing to an equitable and inclusive team and organizational culture.
  • Commitment to the Center’s mission to improve the well-being of low- and moderate-income people and advance equity and justice.
  • Experience editing materials in translation and/or Spanish-language fluency a plus.

CBPP is operating on a hybrid work schedule of two in-office days (Tuesday and Wednesday) per week, as well as the first Thursday of each month in our Washington, D.C. office.

This position reports to the Editorial Director.
