Job Description

Modern Healthcare, the leading source for healthcare business news, is seeking an experienced reporter to be part of a two-person team covering the insurance industry.

Health insurers are diversifying beyond their traditional model and venturing into new areas through strategies such as acquiring medical providers and using data to profitably navigate market dynamics. We seek an aggressive reporter who will dig deep to develop the robust sources necessary to break news on this rapidly changing industry.

Our audience comprises healthcare industry executives, policymakers and decision-makers. Our goal is to inform, shape policy and hold organizations accountable.

The reporter must be a self-starter who will be responsible for daily news coverage and will break news and write enterprise stories for our website and longer-form articles for our print magazine. There also are opportunities for video interviews and podcasts.

Modern Healthcare is based in Chicago.

Job Requirements

We are a collaborative newsroom and need a reporter eager to work with our team of reporters, editors, data experts and graphic professionals to provide compelling content to serve and expand our audience.

Basic Qualifications

• In journalism or related field
• A minimum of three years of reporting experience
• Experience covering healthcare, business or both
• Must be highly motivated and committed to breaking news
• Ability to meet deadlines and file clean, concise and comprehensive copy on complex subjects with a high degree of accuracy, balance and relatability
• Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, juggling several stories at once, and must be curious and eager to generate enterprise feature ideas
• Must have attention to detail, industry knowledge and the ability to interpret data for trend stories
• Web publishing, multimedia and social media experience
• Interest and skills in database journalism
