Cardinal News is looking for a Managing Editor to lead Virginia’s fastest growing team of reporters in fulfilling our mission to cover a journalistically underserved region of our state.
This is a terrific opportunity for an experienced journalist to help chart the editorial course of a young and growing news organization that is quickly becoming recognized as a leader for its journalism in Virginia, and across the country for its business model.
Cardinal News is a nonprofit, nonpartisan online news organization serving Southwest and Southside Virginia but our readers are among the most powerful and influential government and business leaders across the state. We publish new content every weekday to our website and have several newsletters.
The Managing Editor works with a team of reporters that includes the only Richmond-based political reporter dedicated to coverage of issues concerning Southwest and Southside Virginia. The ideal candidate is someone who can comfortably motivate and edit reporters at all experience levels, helping them prioritize their coverage plans with an eye toward impactful enterprise work. We want someone excited to be part of our nonprofit enterprise as we grow our team to meet the needs of our coverage area. This position is remote but requires residency within our region.
Our five reporters also work remotely. We are bringing on a sixth reporter in February to cover education and will have the only full-time education reporter west of Richmond. We expect in the first part of 2023 to bring on board what will be the state’s only health care reporter.
The Managing Editor reports to the Executive Editor and works with the Executive Editor to set the overall editorial direction of staff. The Managing Editor works with reporters and freelancers and on the day-to-day news report and is responsible for maintaining the story budget.
Some specific job duties include:
Working with reporters to develop and deliver consistent, impactful enterprise articles that reveal the challenges and opportunities of our coverage area.
Coaching reporters of all experience levels in a positive, proactive way. Helping them seek and secure training opportunities to grow in their craft.
Working with reporters to identify underserved and unserved communities of all sizes and develop coverage plans.
Front line editor for all stories.
Dedication to fair and balanced reporting; ability to spot holes in articles and work with reporters to fix them.
Working with a growing stable of freelance writers -- including planning, assigning and editing their work -- to supplement our staff reporting.
Working closely with our audience development specialist on story planning and execution to ensure maximum online impact, including nontraditional storytelling.
The ideal candidate has at least 10 years in journalism with a mix of reporting and management experience, and possesses expert command of grammar, AP Style; strong knowledge of libel law and excellent news judgment.
Some skills we are looking for: A proven track record in enterprise work both in editing and reporting.
Ability to showcase print-form journalism in digital space.
An unwavering commitment to fairness and journalism ethics.
A strong communicator across-the-board – to reporters, other Cardinal staffers and the public.
Adaptability. We are a small staff and all wear many hats.
