Job Description

JGPR is actively seeking a talented individual to work full-time launching or building upon an existing career in public relations, in support of clients in the public sector. This role would be based in JGPR’s Canton, MA office working with clients based south of Boston.

Good candidates would be expected to develop positive relationships with clients, and with local, regional, and statewide print and television reporters, editors, and assignment desks.

Current and former newspaper journalists and those working in public relations, public affairs or who have completed internship in those fields are encouraged to apply.

This position has a significant focus on writing -- including feature writing and breaking news/press release writing. Strong writers with a grasp of AP Style, Feature Writing and Inverted Pyramid will be given special consideration, even if you do not have public relations experience.

The role is largely in-person, though there is some flexibility to work remotely on occasion. This is a salaried position.

Work tasks include:

  • Writing and copy-editing press releases and other collateral, with an eye toward publication-ready content

  • Working directly with clients on their public relations and communications needs

  • Crisis management, in close consultation with senior staff

  • Event planning, including media staging and organizing press conferences

  • Media relations, including proactively pitching meaningful stories on behalf of clients and being responsive during breaking news events

  • Development of infographics, flyers and similar graphic design tasks (experience with Canva or a similar program is a plus)

  • Photo or video experience is a plus

  • Attending/covering client meetings and events as needed

  • Consulting with clients on general strategy, both long-term and during crises

  • Taking an active role in JGPR's measurement efforts, showcasing the return on investment to clients

JGPR offers a full suite of benefits including very strong health insurance with 75% of premiums paid by the company, retirement benefits with company match, PTO and more, including health/fitness reimbursement and a personal travel stipend annually!

This position requires availability no more than once per month to serve in an on-call capacity, responding to breaking news as it happens after hours (between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. M-F) and on weekends. This responsibility is shared among the entire public relations team on a rotating basis and extra pay is offered.

To apply, email with a cover letter, résumé and writing samples.

Job Requirements

Applicants should have at least three years of experience either in a newsroom or public relations agency setting.

The following experiences and skills, taken together, would make the ideal candidate stand out:
  • Writing/editing feature-length stories
  • Enterprise Reporting
  • Covering public schools and school-related issues
  • Covering municipal government, especially in New England
  • Experience in education
  • Canva
  • Video filming and editing (nice to have)
  • Wordpress experience
This position requires the incumbent to take part in a regular on-call rotation, responding to breaking news after hours and on weekends no more than once a month (and less frequently as the team grows).

This role is an in-person role based in our Canton, Massachusetts office.
