Job Description

Connecticut Public seeks an Executive Editor to lead our NPR affiliate station, WNPR, and drive our cross-platform strategy. This editor will have a vision for the future of public media and how it fits into and expands to become the leading news organization in the state.

The successful candidate will be passionate about public radio and podcasts and puts all platforms on equal footing. Utilizing the reporting and narrative talents of our public radio reporters, hosts, producers, and editors to meet our audience where they are, no matter the platform. They will develop, expand and enhance our news team to tell powerful stories across our radio, television, and digital platforms. If your goal in life is to help fill in the gap left by declining public local media and see public media as the future of local journalism.

The Executive Editor leads Connecticut Public's growing multi-platform news team, overseeing short and long-term news content and production across radio, television, and digital channels. 

As the leader for Connecticut Public's news team, the Editor will ensure coverage of critical issues and stories that meet the content organization's strategic goals. Balances daily news demands with in-depth reporting, leads staff in making creative and consistent use of every platform and ensures the highest journalistic and ethical standards. 

The Executive Editor directly supervises newsroom operations and news department staff and cooperates with Content group leadership and other colleagues to support the Connecticut Public's mission. The top Editor will be a committed advocate for diversity in newsrooms and how we tell stories.

Leads and manages the planning, reporting, editing, and presentation of news on all platforms. The Executive Editor defines and maintains ethical, editorial, artistic, and technical standards for radio, television, and digital news coverage. 
The Executive Editor must be a strategic thinker and organized manager with insights into the future of public media and how news fits into the evolving media landscape.

Job Requirements

  • Sets  CT Public’s News state-wide editorial agenda, both short- and long-term.
  • Works with Chief Content Officer on long-term planning to develop CT Public news goals across all platforms.
    Leads newsroom planning and discussions, generally, and with the news management team, to set direction and tone of content.
  • Regularly reviews and provides constructive feedback on CT Public’s News content, to ensure consistency of CT Public’s content and approach across all audio, video and digital platforms.
  • Manages, directs and grows our News team to produce reporting that serves the citizens of Connecticut.
  • Contributes to strategy and direction of CT Public News as key member of Content Senior Leadership Team and steps in for colleagues as needed.
  • Ensures reporters are focusing on significant topics that support the overall direction of CT Public News and meet our standards for journalistic excellence.
  • Carries out office responsibilities, is readily available for collaboration and consultation within the department and across the organization, and to fills in editing daily material as circumstances require,
  • Serves as the chief communication voice for the newsroom, ensuring that all staff are kept in the loop on both daily issues and longer-term strategic matters.
  • Follows CT Public ethics guidelines, and helps reporters adhere to those same ethical standards.
  • Coordinates with editorial and team leaders on newsletter, digital and linear TV/Radio strategies around each project.  
  • Coaches reporters on creative ways to tell stories on radio and digital.
  • Coaches reporters and editors on developing project ideas, reporting techniques, and in delivering the finished project to our audiences.
  • Identifies and implements best practices and new tools that can advance CT Public’s editorial mission.
  • Seeks opportunities to produce quick-turn deep reporting on breaking news situations.
  • Plans for special coverage opportunities on major upcoming news events.
  • Allocates resources in support of organization’s editorial mission.
