Job Description

Star Tribune seeks a Graphics Producer to conceptualize and execute data visualizations across all platforms. This person will help contextualize the news with maps, charts, diagrams and explainers, enriching our newsroom’s audience-led storytelling.

This candidate should be a problem-solver and collaborator, and should also help support our newsroom’s efforts towards digital-first publishing. You will need to leverage relationships from across the room — with editors, reporters, designers and developers — to create graphics and guide data-rich storyforms. This candidate should be a team player, eager to share the production load for several platforms, from the newspaper to Instagram, while also keeping an ear to the ground for ambitious opportunities beyond the daily churn.

You will be expected to uphold standards of accuracy, ethics and equity in all coverage.

Star Tribune is committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace, and encourages qualified applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate should have a passion for local/regional journalism as well as many of the following:

  • Belief in clear/frequent communication, and ability to manage relationships across the room
  • Experience in acquiring, cleaning, analyzing and identifying patterns in datasets
  • Proven ability to write concise narratives around data
  • Strong sense of how data and design work together to aid reading experiences
  • Ability to guide graphics-and-data-based story ideas from inception to execution while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • A clear understanding of how to build data visualizations for multiple platforms, from the smallest mobile screens to the Sunday newspaper
  • Confidence in choosing appropriate charts, maps and visuals necessary to tell stories with industry best practices
  • Familiarity with commonly-used graphics software for charting (like d3, Datawrapper, Flourish), mapping (like QGIS, ArcGIS, Mapbox), and design (like Adobe Illustrator) to name a few. Experience with 3D software and motion graphics are a bonus!
  • Ability to write and edit basic standards-based HTML and CSS (Javascript is a plus!)
  • Must be a strong advocate for users but flexible enough to adjust as requirements change
  • Exceptional time-management skills with the ability to juggle deadline and advance projects
  • Respectful giver and receiver of regular critiques, and a belief that feedback raises quality
  • Commitment to viewing all stories through an equity lens
  • Designing, with your manager, a growth plan for learning new skills and setting goals
