Job Description

Patch is hiring a local editor to cover the south suburbs of Chicago, including the communities of Matteson, Country Club Hills, Chicago Heights, Homewood and Flossmoor. This is one of several positions Patch is adding this year. Local editors report in a reliable, trusted and timely manner the consequential news about people, places and events that matter to a community.

Patchers are passionate about fulfilling a mission of service to our communities and colleagues. We work hard. We lead with our hearts. We look out for each other and celebrate our successes together. We learn from our mistakes, dust ourselves off and move forward. Always forward. Patch offers a unique newsroom culture: positive, supportive, growth focused and entrepreneurial. We're transparent about our business and analytics. It's not unusual on our All-Hands video gatherings to see a staffer's chicken or horse, a self-care expert, or our resident comedian.

Patch employs about 200 journalists, technologists and sales pros. A sense of belonging among our teammates is critical to our growth and achievement. We seek to build an eclectic, talented team to match the cultural diversity of our country. Patch is an equal opportunity employer committed to providing employees with an inclusive work environment free of discrimination and harassment.

Ranked among the U.S.'s 50 most-read websites, Patch has grown its editorial team by at least 10 percent a year for the last three years. Patch's business growth has been covered in the Wall St. Journal, New York Times, Ad Age, and other industry press. Patch journalists participate in ProPublica's Electionland and Documenting Hate initiatives.

Job Requirements

Ideal candidates for a full-time, salaried Patch job are tenacious, agile, productive reporters and sharp storytellers. If you have an enterprising spirit, love to set your own local news agenda and don't need a city editor to assign stories to you, Patch may be right for you.

  • passionate about community journalism
  • enthusiastic, competitive and innovative
  • capable of turning a smart, accurate headline
  • adept practitioners of social media and SEO
  • committed to community engagement
  • always eager to learn
  • tech savvy

On a daily basis, Patch staffers:

  • spot scoops, break stories and report them in real time
  • write headlines; select photos; report original news; curate local news of interest
  • work collaboratively with colleagues and independently when necessary
  • organize local home pages and email newsletters according to best practices
  • run branded social media channels
  • study key metrics to monitor performance and improve tactics
  • use the latest digital tools
