Responsible for supporting the Editor in managing the editorial side of the production of four print issues of Documentary Magazine a year.
In collaboration with the Editor, Publisher and Creative Director, develop themes and story ideas, write articles, assign and manage writers, source and clear rights for photographs and artwork, and proofread and fact-check copy.
Write articles, blog posts, and interviews to assist the editor in maintaining a steady flow of timely, relevant original editorial content for documentary.org.
Serve as a visible and engaged representative for the magazine, and of IDA more broadly, attending festivals and other events and forming and maintaining positive relationships with filmmakers and industry representatives.
Develop and maintain expertise on various areas of documentary filmmaking and proactively keep up with trends and major developments within the field.
Engage broadly and proactively with the field, serving on juries and moderating panels and Q&A’s for both IDA and at other industry festivals, screenings and events.
Assist Editor in evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, editorial style guide and publishing standards.
Coordinate, manage agenda for and participate in regular editorial meetings.
Work with the Editor to provide mentorship and support to Documentary Magazine Editorial Fellows.
Manage and maintain the production schedule of the print magazine and serve as the primary contact person with the printer, distributor and subscriptions agencies.
Oversee shipment to various distribution outlets, festivals and markets, promoting the issue on different platforms and assisting with preparing the digital edition.
Maintain magazine inventory including receiving, storing and coordinating shipping of issues for events, partnerships and trades.
Oversee resolution of missing/damaged/RTS magazine issue notices.
Work with Office Manager and Membership Manager to generate membership and subscriber mailing labels for the magazine printer.
Work with Office Manager to process Documentary magazine subscription requests for institutions and schools.
Maintain rights and clearances bible for all magazine photo and artwork assets.
Manage and maintain the online editorial content schedule, giving consideration to other IDA content output.
Regularly analyze performance metrics and work with the Editor and Communications team to set and monitor goals for growth and engagement.
Work with the Editor to identify opportunities to expand the magazine's reach and circulation.
Program Support and Staff Writing (as needed)
Provide occasional as-needed support to programmatic staff across the organization to write, polish and proofread programmatic copy that broadly supports IDA programs and events.
Collaborate with the Executive Director, Advocacy Staff and Board and Advocacy Committees to write letters, statements, policy documents and editorial content in support of advocacy and emergency response campaigns, meeting sometimes urgent turn-around and deadlines.

Experience in building and nurturing trusting, collaborative relationships with filmmakers and others in the documentary industry, including a demonstrated ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
5+ years of professional experience including 3+ years of experience working within the documentary industry is preferred; a passion for and deep knowledge of documentary film is a requirement
BA and/or MFA in a relevant subject such as Journalism, Film Studies, English, Communications or similar field of study or comparable relevant job experience
Strong professional editorial experience required, experience with Film or Entertainment publication a big plus
Excellent writing skills, particularly editorial in nature
Experience and knowledge of implementing SEO best practices, such as adapting print article headlines for web, keyword usage, and in-article linking
Strong reporting and interviewing skills
Excellent presentation and public speaking skills
Working familiarity with The AP Style Book and The Chicago Manual of Style
The pay range for this role is $62,400 - $68,640 annually.
All positions are currently remote. We prefer for this position to be located in Los Angeles; however, we will consider exceptionally qualified candidates based outside of Los Angeles.
