Job Description

The Department of Journalism in the School of Communication at Emerson College is hiring a full-time, one-year, non-renewable, non-tenure track professor (“term faculty”) in Journalism Design to join the department in the Boston campus. The appointment will begin on August 19, 2021.

Job Requirements

Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the college’s intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities.
The ideal candidate will have a portfolio of work in how emerging media technologies, platforms and communication ecosystems are impacting the design, delivery, and reception of news media. As this position will focus specifically on the relationship between news ecosystems and underserved communities, and how news can support equity and justice for marginalized populations, previous experience in these areas are strongly preferred. This aligns with the Emerson journalism department’s mission of advancing equity and inclusion through journalism study and practice.

The position is expected to support existing courses in data journalism, participatory design methods, interactive news, news editing and design, visual storytelling, and long-form multimedia storytelling. Experience in human centered design, participatory journalism, community engagement and digital storytelling preferred. Members of historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications:
At a minimum, candidates must have either a Master’s degree in Journalism, Digital Design, Communication, Civic Media, or in a related discipline, or extensive professional experience in these areas. Candidates should demonstrate a record (or promise) of successful teaching at the college level, especially in the context of a diverse student community. Professional experience in journalism, digital design, or related areas is required.
Rationale:
The Journalism undergraduate program has integrated design into its foundations tier, and intends to develop more advanced courses in information and digital design throughout the curriculum. The Journalism Department is actively focusing on approaches to journalism that adopt responsive visual multimedia interfaces to present stories with clarity and highlight user engagement and interaction.
Students in our graduate programs (Journalism and Media Design) would greatly benefit from the term faculty’s expertise and full-time availability to guide and mentor them on the design and completion of their capstone projects.

To Apply, please submit the following: 1.) Curriculum vitae; 2.) Cover letter indicating teaching philosophy and professional orientation; 3.) Summary of teaching evaluations (if available); and, 4.) Contact information for three references (not to be contacted without applicant’s written approval). To apply – CLICK HERE
Review of applications will begin October 21, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.
