POSITION: Reporter, 90.5 WESA
STATUS: Temporary, Full-time, Exempt
REPORTS TO: News Director
AVAILABLE: Immediately
Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting is seeking a reporter to cover the economic impact and recovery from COVID-19 in southwestern Pennsylvania.  This is an exciting opportunity to participate in critical journalism that will tell the pandemic stories of our communities with a special focus on communities of color, which have seen disproportionate health and economic impacts from the pandemic.
This work will leverage consumer research conducted by Campos, a Pittsburgh-based research firm and partner in this project, to better understand consumer sentiments and disparities in the impact of the pandemic.
This temporary, full time, exempt position reports to the News Director.  This is a grant funded position that will last for 9 months, starting September 1, 2020.
Major Responsibilities
  • Research, report, write, and produce multimedia spot and feature stories for WESA’s air and digital platforms, at a rate that meets newsroom productivity goals
  • Generate and pitch creative, thoughtful and original story ideas in multiple media
  • Execute assignments from newsroom managers
  • Mix and edit audio reports on deadline for broadcast and for the web
  • Take still photos and video in the field
  • Use social media to break news, engage audiences and expand one’s source base
  • Make public appearances as needed to enhance WESA’s engagement and brand
  • Participate in on-air and online fundraising as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Sound and ethical news judgement
  • Understanding of and experience with issues impacting communities of color
  • Strong reporting, writing and technical skills
  • Strong digital and social media skills
  • Ability to acquire, edit and mix high quality audio for use on air or on digital platforms
  • A track record of producing timely news stories and features on interest to local audiences
  • Self-motivated and capable of independent work
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
  • Ability to travel throughout the region and work flexible hours as necessary
Desired Qualifications and Skills
  • Three or more years of reporting in a professional newsroom environment
  • Experience covering Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania
WESA Overview
The WESA newsroom is the largest radio newsroom in western Pennsylvania and has emerged in recent years as an essential source for journalism for the region.  Its team includes 20 full-time reporters, producers, editors, and anchors, plus part-time producers, reporters and contributors.  Reporting in five primary areas – government and accountability, health/science, education, art/culture and infrastructure – is complimented by timely coverage of breaking news and events.
In addition to reporting, newsroom teams also produce hourly newscasts and programming that includes “The Confluence,” a daily news show; “Pittsburgh Explainer,” a weekly news podcast; “The Daily Briefing,” a web-based update of news as it unfolds, and “Inbox Edition,” WESA’s widely-read morning digital newsletter.

Work Environment
Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting places a high priority on employee safety and well-being; given the current COVID-19 pandemic, access to the Community Broadcast Center is restricted and most operations are remote.
This position routinely requires use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and printers in addition to professional audio capture and production devices.  This position requires travel to various areas of western Pennsylvania.  Typical office hours are Monday -Friday, 9:00 – 6:00, however, evenings and weekend work may be required.
