Job Description

The Daily Journal of Commerce, a Portland-based business-to-business news and information resource for the building industry in Oregon and Southwest Washington, has an opening for a multimedia editor helping cover the local architecture, engineering and construction industries. The multimedia editor will spend 50% of their time reporting news and 50% of their time developing and implementing a newsroom-wide strategy for telling stories through multiple mediums, including web, social media, visual and audio formats.
We’re a small, fast-paced newsroom, and we’re looking for a multimedia editor and journalist with a competitive streak who’s eager to provide quality print stories while also helping move the DJC to the next level of digital coverage for our subscribers.
Our ideal candidate:
  • has the depth and versatility to handle breaking news, features and profiles, and long-form stories that provide readers with an understanding of the industry’s issues and challenges;
  • has experience with photography, videography and editing software;
  • has the desire to convert traditional print products to dynamic, web-based and interactive websites;
  • has a proven ability to connect the dots to find the bigger picture;
  • is able to adapt writing style for print, online and social media platforms;
  • understands the written word isn’t the only way to tell a story (and has the multimedia samples to prove it);
  • is interested in helping our readers understand the worlds of architecture, engineering, construction, real estate and development in Oregon and Southwest Washington (with an emphasis on the Portland-metro area);
  • has experience using social media as a reporting tool;
  • has the ability to juggle several tasks at the same time, including but not limited to: working with sources, writing stories, editing content, posting stories and managing our voice on all social media platforms;
  • Develop and implement strategy to tell stories through various mediums
  • Train editorial staff on various technologies
  • Lead editorial department social media efforts
  • Load stories, videos and photos onto the websites
  • Assist in videography, photography and streaming of live events
  • Maintain an open door to the community of readers and non-readers about newspaper coverage
  • Attend after hours events that include weekends and evenings while also being willing to report the news

Job Requirements

  • A degree in journalism or similar field is required
  • A minimum of five years' experience in the newspaper, web publishing or similar field
  • Solid writing and researching skills
  • Strong photography and videography skills
  • Strong understanding of web-based content and social media
  • Good news judgment along with good organizational and interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to quality
  • Creativeness and the ability to meet deadlines is imperative
  • Desire to develop and implement long-term strategies
  • Strong commitment to collaboration and the implementation of new ideas
