Job Description

States Newsroom, the nation’s leading network of state-based nonprofit news outlets, is seeking a Washington Bureau Chief to direct our national coverage. The Washington Bureau Chief will manage staff and freelance reporters, assign and edit state-specific daily and enterprise stories, as well solicit stories and field pitches. The Bureau Chief will also collaborate with States Newsroom editors across the country to ensure each state’s political context informs our national reporting.

The Washington Bureau Chief may also have weekly check-ins with a small set of state editors to ensure standards are met and to facilitate improvements in their newsrooms. In addition, the Bureau Chief may work with States Newsroom’s National Editors to advise state editors on national, regional or cross-outlet projects, specific outlet improvement plans, and best editing practices.

The Bureau Chief will also participate in regular meetings of all state editors and more infrequent gatherings of the entire project staff. Some travel may also be required.
