Job Description

Beacon is looking to hire one full-time reporter. Responsibilities will primarily include reporting and writing original stories.

The ideal candidate has some experience reporting and is well-versed in progressive politics. They will be able to work in a fast-paced environment, independently pursuing stories (remotely for the time being) while also working as part of a tight-knit team. 

About Beacon

Beacon is a news website created by Maine People’s Alliance to highlight the experiences of everyday Mainers, share information about the political and policy processes that affect Maine people and promote a progressive worldview based on community, fairness and investing in the future.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Researching and writing daily news stories, occasional enterprise pieces
  • Creation of daily newsletter
  • Help in maintaining Beacon’s social media presence 
  • Developing sources for issue-based reporting including with Maine lawmakers, advocates, directly affected people

Job Requirements

A qualified applicant should possess:

  • Excellent research, writing and reporting skills

  • Experience reporting on politics or progressive issues 

  • Deep commitment to vision of racial, social and economic justice and to building progressive power

  • Some knowledge of Maine legislature, political process

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet writing deadlines

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and occasional weekends

  • Ability to travel to Augusta when needed

  • Ability to work from home (for now)

Salary is commensurate with experience, $36k-$46k.
