Job Description

The Department of Journalism in the School of Communication at Emerson College seeks a scholar with professional experience in data visualization, data-driven storytelling and civic media, with an emphasis on work in and about diverse communities. This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor rank. This full-time faculty member would work with the undergraduate and graduate programs in Journalism and the graduate program in Media Design. The appointment begins August 20, 2020.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a portfolio of work in data visualization, design and civic-oriented work that intersects with journalism practice and inquiry as well as effective teaching experiences with a diverse student community. The Department of Journalism is seeking a faculty member who will lead its efforts to extend data storytelling and media design in all facets of its forward-thinking, learner-centered, multimedia curriculum as well as expand the School of Communication’s graduate media design program’s civic engagement work.

Candidates with experience in participatory and human-centered design methods, and journalism practice and research that focuses on innovative design practices, especially with underrepresented communities, are preferred.

At a minimum, candidates must have a Master’s degree in Journalism, Digital Design, Communication, Civic Media, or in a related discipline. Candidates with a Ph.D. are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will have college-level teaching experience especially in working with diverse student communities as well as at least five years of professional experience in journalism, data visualization, digital design, or related areas. We expect candidates to have a vibrant professional practice and/or research agenda that they will continue to pursue in keeping with the department’s tenure standards, ideally in ways that can potentially include students.
