Job Description

You are responsible for helping readers understand the people running for and serving in Congress, the leaders setting the congressional agenda, and the lobbying and campaign finance activity that fuel politics and elections. You will work with a core team of reporters and editors at Bloomberg Government, plus teams around the newsroom, to ensure that readers are aware of election developments, including the issues driving the debate, the personalities involved, and outside activities. You’ll also work with leadership and policy reporters so readers know the legislative strategies being pursued by House and Senate leaders, with intelligence about what’s around the corner and how and why plans shift.

Manage a team of reporters and editors with beats including elections, campaign finance, congressional leadership, and lobbying activity.

Serve as the newsroom’s point person on election coverage and assist newsroom leaders setting strategy.

Help other TLs and news teams shape their stories to ensure they meet high standards, use available data, and connect dots.

Edit, review, and contribute to stories so they’re informative and engaging.

Shift between breaking news and coverage of individual races or legislative actions to enterprise stories analytical pieces that provide a broader picture.

Coordinate with reporters and editors on leadership coverage to ensure readers have information about the legislative agenda and changes to it, including contributions to special reports such as Hill Watch.

Work with reporters to generate story ideas that shine a light on personalities on Capitol Hill and K Street, and help readers understand the candidates who are on their way to Congress.

Drive staff to try new things and explore additional ways to help people understand election dynamics, such as graphics, slide decks, podcasts, and interactive experiences.

Manage and oversee special projects, such as election night and day-after coverage.

Job Requirements

Excellent leadership, news judgment, editing, and story-management skills.
Strong and thoughtful analytical and decision making, and the ability to assess which items need to be handled with urgency and which should be considered further.
Effective change management skills and ability to help drive the group.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams, develop relationships and influence news reporting and editing, including with personnel who don’t directly report to you. .
Experience with nonpartisan, neutral reporting and analysis of political and election developments.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and ability to show those skills on tight deadlines.
Knowledge of digital news and information publishing operations.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum 7+ years’ journalistic, legal, or business publishing experience, including reporting, writing and substantive editing of complex material. 
Demonstrated record of success in identifying, developing and publishing terrific stories.
Experience with federal election coverage preferred.
Demonstrated track record of success in management or project management/leadership experience.
