Job Description

Previous Press Role Preferred | Experience on Federal or State Campaigns

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence.

Each year, 36,000 people in the U.S. die from gun violence. We can change that. No organization has a more comprehensive and systematic approach to ending America’s gun violence epidemic. Brady believes that Americans, working together, are more powerful than any problem, and we invite those who feel the same way to join us in our work. We know our multi-pronged approach of education, litigation, and legislation will ensure that one day, every American can live free from the fear of being shot. Join us in creating that America.

POSITION: Public Relations Manager

Reports To: VP, Communications

Based: Onsite in the Washington D.C. Headquarters

In this position, you will use your networks and persuasive writing skills to grow Brady’s visibility and engagement by procuring high profile media coverage on Brady's priorities and activities as well as opportunities for Brady content experts as speakers. We are counting on you to make Brady the most frequently invoked name in the gun violence prevention (GVP) movement and most highly recognized among American and international audiences.

  • Promote Brady’s point of view to its main audiences through well-constructed media releases and pitched interviews.

  • Write engaging, fact-checked, and error-free content for, but not limited to, Brady’s press releases, and website, as well as speech writing for Brady spokespersons’ engagements.

  • Monitor media for opportunities where Brady can insert gun violence prevention into the conversation.

  • Prepare Brady speakers for engagements via creation and rehearsing of appropriate talking points.

  • Assist Brady’s VP of Communications in media training selected Brady staff.

  • Introduce Brady President to bookers and personalities to promote future engagements on-air and in press.

  • Maintain lists of ongoing speaking opportunities and pitch Brady content experts.

  • Pitch Brady annually for appropriate awards.

  • Previous Hill experience or Press Role preferred.

  • Experience on federal or state campaigns in press role preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years of work experience in a similar role desired, ideally with an advocacy or political organization.

  • A strong network of contacts among cable, network, and radio media personalities and bookers, as well as high profile newspaper and magazine reporters.

  • Experience in rapid response/crisis communications situations, pushing a legislative agenda.

  • Outstanding writing, editing, and copy-editing skills.

  • Experience with Meltwater. Kraft CMS a plus.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage priorities and multi-task in a rapid response environment.

  • Ability to shift emphasis and schedule when events occur or promotional opportunities arise, frequently including evenings and weekends.

  • The ability to understand and translate Brady's mission and interests effectively for a wide variety of audiences.

  • BA in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or another appropriate field.

To learn more about Brady’s efforts, view Kris Brown, Brady’s President, talking about Brady's 3 Point Plan:

Expand Brady Background Checks to all gun sales. 1 in 5 guns are sold without a Brady Background Check due to gaps in the system that could be easily fixed.

  • Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Shooters in massacres such as Parkland, Las Vegas, Orlando, Sutherland Springs, Aurora, and Sandy Hook have all used assault weapons and high capacity magazines. These weapons of war DO NOT belong on our streets.

  • Pass Extreme Risk Protection Order Laws (ERPO's) Nationwide. An extreme risk protection order allows family members and law enforcement to seek court permission to temporarily remove guns from a person in danger of harming themselves or others.
