Job Description

Bridge Magazine seeks a tenacious Capitol watchdog reporter to help lead our high-quality, high-enterprise coverage of Michigan government, politics and elections.

Bridge, four-time Michigan Press Association “Newspaper of the Year,” provides readers and leaders frequent, nonpartisan, public-focused, substance- and issue-driven stories and coverage. The successful candidate has:

  • A proven ability to rapidly develop and execute diverse enterprise story ideas.

  • Experience covering government and politics and building a diverse network of sources.

  • An investigative journalism track record, including data and public records reporting.

  • Ease with multitasking and producing diverse forms of journalism. You should be equally comfortable breaking news and driving enterprise through great reporting, writing, storytelling and interactivity.

  • Keen adherence to coverage based on evidence and facts, not ideology, and a proven commitment to finding smart ideas and perspectives from across the political spectrum.

  • Savvy and tenacious use of social media.

  • Passion for explaining big-picture issues in “kitchen-table” relevant ways and writing for voters rather than political insiders.

  • A desire to get out of Lansing, connect with voters throughout Michigan and cover politics through issues critical to residents and local communities.

We want a journalist who is passionate about working collaboratively, expanding Bridge’s readership and interacting enthusiastically with The Center for Michigan’s public engagement and audience growth specialists. This includes a demonstrated passion for reader engagement, in social media and in person through Bridge events and outreach.

This full-time position is based in Lansing, Michigan but will require frequent travel, especially in campaign season. Compensation, which includes salary, health benefits, vacation and a 401(k) plan, is competitive and commensurate with experience. The Center for Michigan/Bridge Magazine is an equal opportunity employer.

Candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, clips and references to Bridge Editor David Zeman at and Managing Editor Joel Kurth at by Aug. 14.
