Summary:
Visit Baltimore is seeking a savvy and enterprising journalist and editor to lead its integrated content creation and distribution efforts. The ideal candidate will be a conscientious reporter, a swift writer, a skilled editor and a constant champion for quality storytelling in the modern age. S/he will possess a curiosity for the world, a strong desire to teach and learn, and the bravery to experiment with new tools, models and technologies.

The Editorial Director will serve as the managing editor of Visit Baltimore’s published guides. S/he is responsible for directing and/or executing the writing, editing, and production of the magazines. S/he will also be responsible for ideating, setting and executing a range of editorial strategies and tactics for Visit Baltimore, including content heavy CESR campaigns (social media series), the annual report and other owned products such as talking points memos and speeches for the CEO.

The Editorial Director is comfortable in a deadline-driven newsroom setting. S/he can pivot with ease in a fast-paced environment. In addition to serving as lead creative writer, s/he will contribute meaningfully to the organization’s vision and mission by serving actively in any of these capacities: idea distiller, channel strategist, storytelling mentor, second-round editor and writing coach.

The Editorial Director maintains the organization’s writing style and ensures the stylistic consistency of Visit Baltimore’s digital and print materials; s/he will act as a primary proofreader for the organization.

This position reports directly to the Chief Marketing Officer and closely collaborates with other members of the Communications and Marketing staff, as well as with colleagues in Membership, Sales and elsewhere within the tourism community.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement an annual editorial strategy and tactical plan that embraces best-practice integrated marketing tactics and channels, while supporting Visit Baltimore’s current marketing campaigns and/or prioritized brand messages;
  • Direct the ongoing development of editorial dossiers for consumer and B2B publications, with the support of the Publications Manager;
  • Serve as lead creative writer for publications, speeches, select brand collateral and web features; contribute to the development of social content and communications products (press releases, media advisories) as needed;
  • Collaborate with and/or support the Director of Brand Marketing and the Communications Director in the development and execution of cross-departmental initiatives, including an upcoming brand identity revamp as well as national leisure campaigns and activations; and work collaboratively with other creative professionals including designers, printers, writers and photographers in order to produce well-executed publications.
  • Research and facilitate opportunities for the President and CEO to speak at hospitality and community events to raise awareness of the impact of tourism within Baltimore business and resident communities;
  • Develop messaging/speeches for public, community and sales presentations including the annual meeting, town hall meeting and other hospitality related events for the President and CEO, Board members and City officials; write and edit all Board, stakeholder and member correspondence on behalf of the President and CEO;
  • Develop other messages and correspondence for the President and CEO for the Baltimore Convention & Tourism Board as needed;
  • Serve as an active member of the Board’s Marketing and Communications Committee;
  • Direct the production of Visit Baltimore’s annual report, leading the editorial direction, reportage and visual content development, and working in collaboration with the organization’s Graphics & Production Manager and creative agency on overall story, look and feel;
  • Develop content to support the membership e-newsletter, and, bespoke content (such as conference welcome letters) to reach additional stakeholder groups such as audiences within the meetings and conventions space;
  • Exercise excellent judgement in developing key storylines that advance the organization’s mission, demonstrating an eye for detail as well as strong journalistic integrity with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Chief Marketing Officer.

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field, and a minimum of five years’ experience in writer/editor roles that required daily content development from ideation to writing, editing and publishing. Newsroom experience strongly preferred. Strong understanding of local and state politics, media relations and the travel and tourism industry preferred, but not necessary;
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
  • Attention to detail with strong organizational and project management skills;
  • Ability to effectively delegate assignments, multi-task and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to solve practical problems and provide timely and effective solutions;
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of team;
  • Positive attitude, dependability and professionalism is a must.
