Job Description

Prism, the 501c3 nonprofit affiliate to Daily Kos seeks to identify, support and promote the voices of underreported and underrepresented leaders and writers and center their personal stories along with the multiple issues that face them and their communities in progressive media.  The nonprofit seeks to educate our growing community and to create reporting in a fresh way using multiple channels, including podcasts, video and personal storytelling. Our purpose is to bring more diverse stories our community, educate people about critical social justice issues, and share perspectives of those most affected by injustice.  Ideal candidates will have a sophisticated understanding of the online political landscape; a sharp eye for opportunities to add value through a reflective democracy lens to major national stories; a thoughtful approach to leading a team; and an appetite to take on new challenges in a fast-paced, competitive industry.

Prism is seeking a Founding Managing Editor, whose responsibilities will be to direct all journalism-related operations as well as working with the Prism team to elevate and amplify new voices and stories. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.

We have offices in Oakland, California and Washington, DC, but are a remote team and are looking for a highly driven nonprofit executive with experience in startups who will be able to manage the critical pieces of building this nonprofit organization and its team.

General Responsibilities:

Content Management

  • Responsible for the creation, editing, scheduling and production of stories, images and videos that represent Daily Kos Education Fund’s brand and voice. 

  • Responsible for shaping the overall strategy of the editorial dept (in addition to day to day content creation) that will include narratives that focus on voting rights and criminal justice reform but will grow to include other issues facing underrepresented communities

  • Ensures digital platforms produce the frequency and quality of digital stories that increase awareness of issues facing marginalized communities and the leaders and activists working on those issues

  • Serves as primary point of contact for editorial issues. 

  • Oversees the coordination, supervision and completion of all narrative arcs by project.

  • Works with tandem organization/LLC and other outlets to ensure activism, social media departments pick up stories written by our team

 

Fellowship Management

  • Hires and manages senior fellows for each narrative arc/project

  • Oversees hiring of fellows and helps develop contracts with story arcs for each

  • Ensures high quality of fellowship program from promotion to hiring and professional development 

  • Ensures fellows have access to graphic reporter, researcher, social media and admin support to deliver on goals and priorities

Impact and Evaluation

  • Works with Executive Director to decide on narrative arcs to undertake, impact of our work and evaluation of each arc

  • Works with tandem organization/LLC and Marketing and Communications Manager to help measure impact via social media and marketing efforts

    Multimedia Development

  • Works with Marketing and Communications Manager and Executive Director as well as tandem organization/LLC to capitalize on opportunities to use diverse media including podcasting, photo journalism and video


Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Must be efficient, well organized, have a strong interest in reflective democracy news

  • Active and established voice on social media, primarily Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter

  • Efficient, well organized, able to think ‘social and digital first’ ensuring that content is engaging and shareable.

  • Recognize how to break down a story into the parts that are most easily shareable while able to create accompanying screenshots, animated gifs, video clips or whatever else is necessary to create the most engaging narrative.

  • Collaborative team player 

  • Must be a proficient writer who is also an adept copy editor.

  • Must be willing and able to work evenings or weekends when needed to meet deadlines or while on press trips.

  • Must be sufficiently flexible and knowledgeable about the online production process.
