Job Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Communications is seeking a highly skilled communicator to help edit and produce the print and online editions of The University Record, U-M’s internal publication for faculty-staff news.

 

The associate editor will work closely with the editor to find, develop and present stories about, of interest to, and which impact U-M’s faculty and staff. This will be a key supporting role in the production of the Record’s news website, daily email newsletter and weekly tabloid-sized newspaper.

 

This person also will serve as the primary backup in the editor’s absence. The associate editor will help edit stories produced by the Record’s staff writer and interns, as well as collaborate with a broad range of university communicators to identify, edit and process unit-generated news stories for the Record.

 

For this opening, we are seeking a person with the ingenuity, organization and time-management skills to skillfully and effectively track faculty and staff news from a vast assortment of academic and administrative units, as well as the technical skills needed to process and present those stories online and in print. This must be done with speed and accuracy in a decentralized university setting. While the position involves collaboration, particularly with the Record editor, it also requires a self-directed person who can juggle and accomplish multiple concurrent tasks with minimal hand-holding.

 

A typical day may consist of varied emails and phone calls with unit communicators; searching through university websites for stories and story ideas; copy-editing stories from those units as well as from Record writers; assigning, collecting and processing photos from a variety of sources; posting stories to the Record website and preparing the daily email newsletter; proofreading pages for the print edition; and helping to administer the newsletter’s mailing list. This will be done in close contact with the Record editor. The associate editor also may be asked to cover an event on deadline, or write a story for the Record from prepared information.

 

While these duties usually are completed during the business day, it’s not uncommon for the workload to extend into the evening and occasionally on weekends. Therefore, flexibility and communication with the editor regarding scheduling will be vital.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, and work history of progressive work experience in journalism writing and editing.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to cover breaking news and explain complex issues and ideas in an easy-to-understand approach.
  • Ability to understand and execute appropriate news judgment for an official university publication.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small, cross-trained team.
  • Writing experience, as well as editing, with a background covering versatile topics.
  • Comfort working under tight deadlines.
  • Strong knowledge of Associated Press style.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Good judgment, particularly when it comes to anticipating and understanding the goals and missions of stakeholders in a given story.
  • Ability to handle confidential information and topics with sensitivity and circumspection.

Desired Qualifications*

  • At least five years of experience in a related field.
  • The ability to quickly understand, analyze and recommend courses of action for complex issues and effectively communicate complex ideas.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a multimedia approach to communicating news and other important information.
  • The ability to set and meet goals while working both independently and as part of a team.
  • An understanding of issues facing higher education in general, and the University of Michigan in particular.
  • Knowledge of online news presentation.
  • Understanding of or experience with a WordPress-based news website.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML or XML coding.
  • Experience or familiarity with Adobe InDesign.

Work Schedule

A 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday work schedule is typical, but some night and weekend work is expected.

The University Record TeamThe University Record is the official source for faculty-staff news at the University of Michigan, and is part of the U-M Office of the Vice President for Communications. News is posted to the Record website daily and a print edition is distributed weekly (Monday) during the academic year and biweekly during the summer. A companion University Record email newsletter is sent daily to more than 57,000 subscribers during the academic year and weekly during the summer. The Record staff includes an editor, a staff writer, a graphic designer and a sales manager, in addition to the open associate editor’s position.

Reporting StructureReports to the University Record editor, who reports to the assistant vice president for communications/public affairs.

Background Screening
