The Daily Advertiser/theadvertiser.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a full-time Senior ManagerContent Coach. This editor will help launch and oversee a new vertical aimed at producing engaging and timely content about the South that capitalizes on our many news resources throughout the region. The ideal person will help brainstorm and execute this new initiative and edit content that’s focused on the uniqueness of the region. Growing audience, engagement and subscribers is a must.
If you are passionate about good storytelling, a meticulous editor filled with ideas and an expert at coaching writers with varied experience levels, have a track record of producing memorable stories and projects that resonate with local, regional and national audiences and are adept at working in a fast-paced environment, you may be a great fit for this new position.
The editor in this role must also have experience partnering and working with other teams and journalists and our business partners to help make this initiative successful.
Lafayette is located in the southern central part of Louisiana, at the intersection of Highways 10 and 49. It is the fourth largest city in Louisiana and is the only major city in Louisiana that has grown in population since the year 2000. Lafayette resides in an area called Acadiana, which is known as the Cajun Heartland, and is the unofficial Cajun Capitol of the south. Lafayette lies 15 miles west of the Atchafalaya Basin and 35 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and is surrounded by bayous, swamps and marshes along with forests and prairies. The city got its name in 1844 when it was named after the French Marquis de Lafayette.
Lafayette has a strong tourism industry, attracted by the wonderful Cajun food of this region. It has more restaurants per capita of any city in the entire area. The city has a thriving arts community, consisting of theatre, visual arts, and especially music. Cajun music is a combination of bluegrass and French with a little European folk music thrown in. Almost every weekend, there is a music, dance or street festival and the city is known for its great Mardi Gras celebrations when Lafayette explodes with color and wild costumes.
Work with the Regional Editor for the South and a team from across the Network to launch and execute this new initiative.
Assign content to news writers throughout the South.
Edits the top fraction of enterprise, watchdog or investigative content that needs a high-level line editing touch and sometimes taking a hands-on approach to accelerate the path to publication.
Work with the social team to create and optimize content for various social platforms.
Collaborate with the video team to develop and drive traffic to new video franchises.
Manage tight deadlines in a fast-paced, energetic environment.
Build relationships in the South to secure exclusive content and throughout the Network for high engagement and strong readership throughout the country.
Bachelor's or master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five years of extensive editing & media management experience at a news organization.
Be adept at understanding analytics to help inform editorial strategy.
Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
An understanding of and deep appreciation for Southern culture and issues.
Must embrace peer-to-peer training, as a both a teacher and student.
Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
Experience editing and shaping watchdog and investigative journalism.
Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
Understanding use of metrics, social-media and SEO knowledge.
Self-motivation and self-direction.
Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company’s goals.
News often requires employees to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly.
Foreign language skills a plus.
