The Daily Advertiser/theadvertiser.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a full-time talented, results-driven News Director/Editor who can raise the quality of our journalism, focusing on enterprise and investigative work that resonates with our key growth audiences. The person in this senior-level position will play an important role shaping the strategic vision for our audience growth in this growing and culturally rich community. They will lead our efforts to help our team execute those strategies at the highest level with good storytelling about the many places, people and programs that make Lafayette so unique and special.
The editor in this role will need great news sense and a deep understanding of how we seek out and build the biggest audiences possible for our content. The ideal candidate is someone who loves to coach others, sets high standards and has a record of developing strategies for growth and engagement. This person will work with the content creation teams to develop strategies for maximizing the impact and delivery of content at optimal times and with platform needs in mind. The director will work to ensure reporter beats are focused, tied to audience needs and lead to content with high engagement.
Lafayette is located in the southern central part of Louisiana, at the intersection of Highways 10 and 49. It is the fourth largest city in Louisiana and is the only major city in Louisiana that has grown in population since the year 2000. Lafayette resides in an area called Acadiana, which is known as the Cajun Heartland, and is the unofficial Cajun Capitol of the south. Lafayette lies 15 miles west of the Atchafalaya Basin and 35 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and is surrounded by bayous, swamps and marshes along with forests and prairies. The city got its name in 1844 when it was named after the French Marquis de Lafayette.
Lafayette has a strong tourism industry, attracted by the wonderful Cajun food of this region. It has more restaurants per capita of any city in the entire area. The city has a thriving arts community, consisting of theatre, visual arts, and especially music. Cajun music is a combination of bluegrass and French with a little European folk music thrown in. Almost every weekend, there is a music, dance or street festival and the city is known for its great Mardi Gras celebrations when Lafayette explodes with color and wild costumes.
Oversee reporting teams to ensure beats stay focused and results-oriented.
Own and be the champion for content planning to ensure the newsroom delivers consistently on key topics tied to audience growth.
Work in partnership with the Senior News Director for Digital to maximize impact on all platforms, including social media and other emerging platforms.
Make daily content decisions based on news judgment, knowledge of platforms and insights from audience metrics.
Work effectively across all divisions (sales, marketing, news) and help set key strategies and direction for the organization.
Establish and support strategic and career goals for content coaches, planners, producers and reporters.
Oversee department journalism and conversations to ensure they serve reader needs, meet journalism standards and are positioned for growth.
Lead team discussions to identify projects to serve readers and strengthen the.
Organize teams to host public engagement opportunities that identify and build passionate communities of readers around the department’s journalism.
Seek partners within the geographic coverage area as well as nationally to support ground-breaking journalism and conversation.
Scale ideas that work in the department across the newsroom as needed and to other interested network partners.
Stay abreast of evolving readership habits and journalism tools and scale relevant methods to the culture and entertainment department.
Position customer service as a central tenet for success among journalists and leaders who serve readers of entertainment and cultural journalism.
Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
More than five years of media management experience.
Sharp news judgment and experience with public records and databases.
Ability to coach reporters and editors on sophisticated storytelling techniques.
Experience leading both long-term reporting projects and quick-turn enterprise off the news of the day.
Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
Expert knowledge on analytics and other tools to measure reach and impact.
Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers' time and media consumption habits.
Proven proficiency in applying analytics to content strategy.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Exposure to deadline-driven environment.
Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
Social-media and SEO knowledge.
Self-motivation and self-direction.
Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
