Position Overview The KIPP Foundation is seeking a dynamic and visionary communications expert to build and drive KIPP’s external and internal communications strategy. This is an opportunity to join a high-performing organization in its 25th year to increase public awareness and understanding of the amazing work taking place across more than 200 schools each day.
Working closely with senior leadership across the KIPP Foundation and KIPP regions, the Senior Director of Communications will build and lead the team responsible for proactive and reactive media relations, social media management, training and support for regional communications managers, and executive and network-wide communications. The role reports directly to KIPP’s Chief of Policy and Public Affairs. The Senior Director of Communications uses excellent project and people management skills to build and lead a growing team that is responsible for both internal and external communications strategy at the KIPP Foundation. The Senior Director of Communications will collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, using new and existing data to develop and refine KIPP’s communications strategy. The successful candidate will develop a strategic plan to lead the team in successfully executing against it annually, in support of broader organizational and team-wide goals and organizational values.
Key Responsibilities and Duties The successful candidate will lead a growing team within the KIPP Foundation in executing against an annual strategic plan. The plan will primarily focus on the following efforts:
Responsible for developing the annual strategic communications plan which includes earned media, social media, and communication through other relevant platforms
Oversee day-to-day management of KIPP communications including media relations, crisis communications, social media, executive communications, regional communications, etc.
Provide leadership for major communication projects and issue advocacy campaigns
Serve as a key advisor to KIPP Foundation and KIPP network leadership on strategic communications
Support Media Relations Director’s efforts to develop a proactive, national media strategy that acknowledges KIPP’s reputational challenges and strengths
Support Media Relations Director on efforts to build a more scalable approach to crisis communications for KIPP’s 29 regions
In partnership with KIPP’s Marketing team, make a larger investment in market research and message testing to drive more effective communication through earned media and other communication channels
The Senior Director of Communications is a member of the Policy and Public Affairs team, itself comprised of: Communications, Federal Advocacy and Policy, Local Policy, Community Engagement, Marketing, and Alumni Impact and Leadership. The Senior Director of Communications will work collaboratively within these team functions, and in close coordination with the Office of the CEO.

Experience and Qualifications ●Masters or equivalent experience preferred/ Bachelors or equivalent experience required ●12-15+ years of experience ●Passion for KIPP’s mission and values and educational equity ●Demonstrated experience supporting C-Suite level leaders with timely decision making on communications ●Management of communications function in a networked, national or regional organization ●An understanding of how to leverage social media to meet communications objectives ●Ability to be available as needed during off hours for rapid responses/crisis communications ●New York City location preferred ● Travel requirements 20-25% ● Full-time, exempt role
