Job Description

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is a high-caliber strategic policy organization that informs and shapes public policies to reduce poverty, promote equity, and build opportunity. It has a national reputation for conducting rigorous research and analysis, developing policy ideas and strategies, shaping a broad array of policy debates at the federal and state levels, and influencing policy outcomes on a range of critical issues like health care and taxes.  
 
The Center is seeking a skilled leader to fill the role of Director of Media Relations, a key management position within the twelve-person Communications team. The position offers an opportunity for a talented communications professional to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment as part of the Center’s highly collaborative Communications team to help the Center meet its policy goals. The Director of Media Relations will drive the development of media strategy and tactics, maintain and strengthen the Center’s relationships with some of the nation’s most influential journalists while building new relationships with others, and oversee the team’s media relations activities.  
 
The Director of Media Relations will report to the Vice President of Communications and External Affairs, lead the media relations team, and work closely and seamlessly with other members of the Communications team, Center policy experts, and the Center’s Government Affairs team to support the organization’s overall communications efforts.  
 
Responsibilities:  
 
Media relations:  
  • Work closely with senior CBPP leaders to develop and execute media relations strategies that help shape debates on health care, taxes, budgets, and other key issues, both nationally and in targeted states, with a robust focus on the Center’s state-level policy work.  
  • Collaborate with reporters and opinion writers from major national and regional media outlets to generate coverage of CBPP analysis and shape reporting on key issues.  
  • Expand the Center’s relationships with journalists, both in Washington and around the country, with a particular focus on journalists who cover issues of racial equity as well as television bookers, producers, hosts, and guests.  
 
Written communications:  
  • Draft and edit a range of communications materials including advisories, press releases, pitches, etc.  
  • Identify opportunities to inject the Center’s perspective into the debate via op-ed pieces; work with CBPP experts to draft and place pieces.  
 
Message development and media training:  
  • Develop talking points and other messaging materials around key issues.  
  • Prepare CBPP analysts for media interviews and public appearances.  
  • Conduct media trainings with CBPP analysts.  
 
Leadership and management:  
  • Manage a press team of two, including overseeing their work in planning the rollout of CBPP materials and fielding incoming press inquiries.  
  • Guide team members’ professional growth and development.  
  • Manage contracts and oversee work with consultants.  
  • Collaborate with the digital communications director, editorial director, and Vice President of Communications and External Affairs to shape the direction of the Center’s Communications team and advance the organization’s larger goals.  
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with communications and media relations professionals at partner organizations, and collaborate periodically on joint efforts and events.  

Job Requirements

Candidates should have:  
  • A bachelor’s degree. 
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of relevant work experience reflecting progressively higher levels of responsibility. 
  • Experience developing and managing a diverse staff.  
  • Excellent strategic planning, writing, and verbal communication skills.  
  • Deep understanding of the role of media relations in a multi-faceted, issue-based communications campaign.  
  • Strong experience and knowledge of policy issues and the ability to communicate complex policy information to a diverse range of audiences. 
  • Experience working with the news media and strong contacts with national, regional, and specialty print, broadcast, and online media outlets.  
  • A commitment to the Center’s mission to improve the well-being of low- and moderate-income people and to using communications to advance racial equity. 
 
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, quick-turnaround environment; excels at juggling multiple responsibilities and meeting deadlines while maintaining focus on long-term goals and strategies; and has excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse team.

Compensation:
