Job Description

We are in a dynamic conversation with women about the issues that matter to them most — politics, feminism, work, money, relationships, mental health, fashion, and issues relating to equality. Our stories are organized around four categories: Style, Self, Culture, and Power — words that give us a framework for what it means to be a woman moving forward in the world today.

The Cut is looking for an Editor to oversee our Culture section across all of these areas exploring trends, current events, and more. The Culture Editor will direct our coverage of TV, film, pop culture, and books. Culture is a critical vertical at the the Cut, and this Editor will assign profiles, trend pieces, essays, and play a key role in our awards season coverage.

We're looking for someone who thinks critically about the intersection of pop culture and gender. You should be a TV obsessive and a bookworm, with tons of ideas on everything from how we should cover the latest HBO hit series to how we should approach the wave of #metoo comeback essays.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage and edit 2 staff culture writers and 2 weekly columnists.
  • Oversee production of the Cut’s culture calendar and develop overarching culture strategy for the Cut, planning quick-turnaround and long-term coverage.
  • Work in partnership with key stakeholders in SEO, Audience Development, and Social Media to optimize traffic.
  • Coordinate and direct coverage of time-sensitive, big news events.
  • Regularly manage and edit culture-driven pitches by freelance writers, including freelance writers from your network.
  • Monitor the Cut’s social media feeds to ensure culture stories are being shared in the best possible manner.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by manager.

Job Requirements

Role Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of editorial experience, with at least 3 years of editing
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field
  • Strong understanding and passion for the editorial sensibility of the Cut
  • Ability to work quickly to respond to breaking news
  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a larger team
  • A willingness and ability to attend/work events outside of normal working hours as needed
