Job Description

The Buffalo News is looking for an enterprise editor who can lead a team of reporters that will take a big-picture look at how our Rust Belt region is reviving itself.

The big storyline in Buffalo is the city's nascent resurgence. Historic buildings are coming back to life. A medical campus is reshaping downtown. A new solar factory has made big promises about jobs to come. But questions remain: Can the thousands shut out of the workforce reconnect with work? Are there enough new economy jobs to attract people to the region and put the population back on a path to growth? How does a city built for half a million people maintain its roads and infrastructure with half that many residents?

This editor will work closely with veteran reporters to identify untold stories, both big and small, that reveal the surprising ways Buffalo and its surrounding communities are changing. Topics will touch on a wide variety of subjects – from the local economy to health care to equity to waterfront development.

The ideal candidate for this position will be able to juggle the work of coaching reporters and editing stories with identifying new ways to tell those stories and reach readers in a digital world.

You should have a sense of urgency in helping reporters uncover stories that matter and the energy to rethink how what it means to be a journalist today. The ability to edit stories on tight deadlines and a focus on uncovering the news, rather than reacting to the news, are a must. Other skills that will set you apart: the ability to track how stories are doing on the web and respond in real time, experience using Freedom of Information laws to pry public documents free, the ability to help reporters use data to identify trends and uncover stories.

Candidates must have substantial reporting experience and a mastery of news enterprise.

The Buffalo News is an award-winning news organization with the largest staff of journalists in New York State outside of New York City. We have a history of breaking the area's big stories and investing in the stories that matter.

Why Buffalo? The region is in the midst of a revitalization that makes it an exciting time to work and live here. The city has two professional sports teams, a philharmonic, a growing waterfront, a burgeoning medical campus and plenty of attitude. Not to mention Niagara Falls, Toronto and ski slopes all within a short drive.

Send cover letter, resume and clips to recruiter@buffnews.com.
