The Dallas Morning News is seeking a gifted journalist with a strong voice, a passion for community and an ability to find and tell stories about our region that would otherwise go untold. The job of Metro columnist requires solid reporting and excellent writing abilities grounded in a deep understanding of the things that are important to our readers. The successful candidate will become ingrained in North Texas life, with an understanding of the politics, culture and history that shape this area, as well as the way it is changing, for better or for worse. The columnist should serve as a face of our news organization, interacting with readers both with words and in events that highlight and build on our work. Rather than offering off-the-news commentary, the right person will bring us strong ideas based on his or her reporting and experience of North Texas - then turn those into compelling columns written with perspective and insight that persuade without polemicising. The job includes investigative elements, feature storytelling elements and a personal connection with readers. This writer will be expected to file at least three columns per week as well as short takes when appropriate. The writer will also be a member of the Editorial Board, with responsibilities to contribute at least two editorials and attend at least four editorial board meetings per month. The right candidate will be able to quickly build audience and establish reach with readers in person, on social media, on dallasnews.com and in print. You will work with the Dallas editor to establish areas of emphasis in reporting that complement the newsroom and expand our areas of coverage. Spanish language abilities are a strong plus in this region and will be considered an advantage.
