Job Description

The senior associate will develop and implement press strategies at the national and local level to promote AFT priorities, with a focus on broadcast media. Under the general supervision of the media affairs manager, the senior associate will serve as a press strategist for the AFT with a focus on broadcast media, podcasts, and expanding AFT's reach to new audiences.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement media outreach strategies specifically targeted to broadcast media.
  • Build and cultivate relationships with producers and broadcast media outlets, podcasts and non-traditional media outlets.
  • Serve as a media contact at the national level for AFT issues and campaigns and develop proactive media outreach strategies.
  • Staff AFT leaders for events and on travel.
  • Develop strategic prep documents and provide communications support for AFT leaders and members for media interviews and external events.
  • Identify new media audiences for the AFT to reach.
  • Help produce and send a daily clips email each morning to AFT leaders and staff.

Job Requirements

  • Experience in public relations, journalism or campaign research.
  • Experience in broadcast media.
  • Solid relationships with broadcast media.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to respond quickly to developments of importance to the AFT.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Initiative, reliability and the ability to work in a collegial atmosphere.
  • Ability to work effectively with leaders and staff in complex and sometime political situations.
  • Background in labor, education and/or politics is desirable.
  • This position involves moderate travel and sometimes requires working non-traditional hours and weekends.
