The Executive Editor/Assistant Vice President oversees a newsroom staff of 15 (reporters, editors, web producer, and production manager) whose work appears in a number of university publications, both print and digital. Our "flagship" publications are:

The Executive Editor serves as the group’s senior-most editor and editorial leader in a setting that combines high journalistic standards, collaboration with other content providers and distributors, and an ongoing focus on growing the reach and effectiveness of its digital platforms to internal and external audiences. The Executive Editor will not infrequently be a contributing writer to the publications, and as the head of a group of newsroom professionals, is expected to inspire, challenge, and create professional development opportunities for the staff. The Executive Editor also works collaboratively and provides editorial leadership to other units within External Affairs whose work contributes to the newsroom such as our video teams, photographers, social media specialists, data analysts, SEO specialists, magazine designers, and our interactive design group, which provides the development and design capability to make the most of content distributed through our digital platforms. The Executive Editor is also a member of the senior leadership team of the External Affairs group, which shapes External Affairs’ policies and strategic decision-making. The EE reports to the Senior Vice President for External Affairs.


Job Requirements

Required Skills:
 

Master’s degree or equivalent in journalism or communications. At least 10-15 years’ experience as a reporter/editor for news organizations which distribute content through both digital and print platforms. Demonstrated abilities in managing staff, developing reporters, shaping editorial content, and growing readership base. Successful track record in adapting news delivery to digital channels including use of data analytics, search engine optimization, linear storytelling, and web based content management systems. Must have energy and passion for the job, and both ambition and creativity to elevate our expectations, our editorial product, and our readers’ engagement with the university. Demonstrated abilities in matrix management and managing across operational lines in highly collaborative ways. Superior oral and written communications skills. Superior editing abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects on tight deadlines.

Requires work outside normal business hours.

Skills:

• Advocate for those tools the department needs in order to succeed. The EE is the person responsible for being the department’s lead advocate insofar as budget, resources, organizational and career support are concerned. This person must translate and transmit the internal needs of the group so that those with the ability to provide solutions will do so.

• Must understand how to provide professional development and creative opportunities that motivate people, create career paths, and promote job satisfaction.

• Assign and oversee creative assignments, assess the quality of the resulting work, and provide advice, support, and direction when appropriate. The ability to mentor, teach, and creatively empower the staff is a requisite and central part of the job.

• Support staff as they stretch "outside their silo" and acquire a more holistic set of creative skills or pursue new, untested approaches.
 

The EE will set the tone for the newsroom environment, ensuring that it is open, mutually supportive, empowering, and generous in its recognition of superior work and the people responsible for it. The EE is also required to have a successful track record in building creative teams around individuals and their specific strengths and skill sets.
