Job summary
The Office of Public Affairs & Internal Communications performs two complementary, yet distinctively different functions. The Public Affairs team monitors and forecasts emerging issues and manages crisis communication for the university; responds to media inquiries involving university executives and other senior administrators; serves as the central public voice for the university; develops communication strategies to advance major university priorities and initiatives; and advises individuals and units throughout the university regarding communications. Services include: Preparing university leaders and others for media interviews; developing background materials such as Q&As and key messages; providing confidential communication advice to individuals and units throughout the university. Public Affairs manages communication of key university issues including admissions, budget and tuition, labor contracts and major construction projects. The Internal Communications team publishes the University Record, the university’s official faculty-staff news source, online and in print. This opening is on the Public Affairs team. The Office of Public Affairs & Internal Communications is one unit of the Office of the Vice President for Communications, which is responsible for a wide range of communication services to the campus community that enhance the reputation of the University of Michigan. Responsibilities
A senior public relations representative must be a skilled communications professional with deep experience and a well-honed ability to quickly and accurately gather, organize and summarize critical information. Good listening and research skills and strong writing skills are essential. A person in this position will draft talking points for university leaders, write press releases and draft campus news stories under deadline pressure. Members of the Public Affairs team have primary areas of responsibilities and play a central role with crisis communications and communications planning regarding major initiatives across the university. From time to time there may be other duties as assigned. The person filling this position will report to the assistant vice president for communications/public affairs.
 
Desired qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and work history of progressive work experience in journalism, communications, writing, editing or public relations.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Ability to communicate effectively with members of the news media.
• Good judgment, especially while handling confidential information.
• Ability to quickly understand, analyze and recommend courses of action for complex issues and effectively communicate complex ideas.
• Ability to improve the writing of colleagues through editing and coaching as part of a team.
• Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to set and meet goals while working both independently and as part of a team.
• Newswriting experience.
• A deep understanding of higher education.
• Demonstrated experience using social media platforms.
• A working knowledge of the political process and Michigan state government.
 
Work schedule
A flexible 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, in-the-office work schedule is typical, but night and weekend commitments are part of the work routine.
 
Reporting Structure
Reports to the assistant vice president for communications/public affairs.
 
Salary range
$72,000-$80,000 annually, depending on experience.
