Gary Estwick is the breaking news editor and race and culture editor at The Tennessean. He previously served as the editor of Gannett newsrooms in Clarksville and Murfreesboro.
During this span, he produced the USA TODAY Network’s 2023 Juneteenth special section, leaned on his HBCU roots to offer a distinct view of Tennessee State University’s homecoming and directed continued coverage of Rutherford County’s history of illegally arresting and jailing children. He was also heavily involved in coverage of the Covenant School shooting in Nashville.
The New Orleans native spent the first two decades of his journalism career as a sports reporter, covering a variety of high-profile beats for several metropolitan newspapers. He also ventured outside the playing field, from a six-week stint covering the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to studying narrative writing and video production.
In his free time, you can find him diving around paintball fields, exploring virtual reality experiences and smoking meats.
