The Daily Progress is seeking an assistant city editor that can lead and develop the daily local news report, driving beat coverage as well as breaking news and enterprise; assigning stories, centerpieces, series and projects; guiding staff at the front end to ensure stories are comprehensively reported and editing at the back end to ensure all the holes are filled and we have strong, readable copy; working with reporters in the field as needed; bringing a sense of urgency; and serving as a mentor to the news reporting staff. 

The position reports to the city editor and works primarily evening hours, including some weekend shifts.  The ideal candidate will be able to identify strong stories for reporters to pursue and weeds out weaker stories. Front-end edits, reviewing with reporters the essential voices and facts that must be gathered for each story in order to make it complete. Sets deadlines and follows through on them. Ensures that appropriate art is assigned for each story. Reviews with reporters plans for online walkups, write, social media and video. Works with the managing editor and city editor to ensure we have a comprehensive daily local news report, filling and reviewing the budget. Edit final copy not only for accuracy but also for context, readability and thoroughness, working with reporters to improve the quality of the final product. Joins city editor in meeting weekly with staff to review project and enterprise ideas. Ensures and oversees regular Freedom of Information Act filings. Posts content to the web.
