Founded in 2014, The Ithaca Voice is a non-profit news site dedicated to sustaining free and local journalism to inform and educate the residents of Tompkins County.

The Ithaca Voice was founded in response to a crisis in local journalism. At existing media companies in Tompkins County, steep declines in revenue have caused significant cuts to the number of reporters and editors, hurting the quality and availability of important civic and political information in Ithaca.

The Voice aims to reverse this trend by providing free access to breaking news stories and in-depth features that probe into complex and dynamic local issues. Additionally, The Voice has become the online home for all things Ithaca, including dining, local personalities and other stories divorced from some of the conventions of a daily newspaper.

To fund these efforts, The Voice pioneers new methods of generating revenue with online-only news through innovative partnerships with local businesses, display and video advertisements, and fundraising efforts. At the same time, The Voice plans to incorporate and build on the proven successes of a growing number of non-profit news sites across the country.
