Interlochen Public Radio seeks an experienced reporter and editor to direct our news team in northern Michigan. This is an opportunity for a leader with vision for public service journalism to shape our news effort and drive it forward. We need someone who can inspire others to do ambitious work, ask better questions, tell better stories and otherwise do more valuable and penetrating journalism. The ability to collaborate with other news outlets is also important.
The News Director will supervise three full-time staff--reporters and on-air hosts--as well as freelance producers and interns. This position reports to the Executive Director of IPR. The News Director will also have some program responsibilities managing the day to day broadcast. IPR is in a development phase and will soon finalize a strategic plan that aims to raise more money for local news production, add one reporter position and expand our internship program.
Interlochen Public Radio serves Northwest Lower Michigan with separate channels for news and classical music. It’s a beautiful region known for its wondrous natural resources, particularly the Great Lakes. Our FM footprint includes roughly 250,000 people in an area 200 miles across. The services are owned by Interlochen Center for the Arts, an arts education organization that has been in operation for 90 years.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, communications or journalism.
3-5 years experience reporting, writing and producing stories for a public radio audience.
Experience editing public radio reporters.
Knowledge of audio editing software and audio recording devices.
Knowledge of website and social media enough for updates.
General knowledge of technology to operate a computer, radio board op and automation functions.
