The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is the Smithsonian's headquarters for research on the coastal zone. Its scientists study climate change, conservation, invasive species, pollution and other critical environmental issues shaping the 21st century.
The center has its headquarters on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay, in Edgewater, Md., located 30 miles east of Washington, D.C. Its scientists do research in coasts around the world, including California, Florida, Alaska, Panama, Australia and the Ross Sea off the coast of Antarctica.
