Company Description:

Berkeleyside, Berkeley, California’s award-winning, independent online news site, is looking to hire a food writer/editor to take Nosh, our vibrant East Bay food section, to the next level. This is a three-day a week position with the possibility of becoming a full-time position.

Responsibilities include:

• Reporting stories about the openings and closings of restaurants, bars and cafés in the East Bay; scoring scoops and keeping up with the fast-paced food scene; looking into leads; cold-calling; boots-on-the-ground investigating; identifying trends; cultivating sources within the industry.
• Writing informed feature stories on the business of food, food justice, profiles and in-depth investigations.
• Growing Nosh’s social media presence across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
• Planning the Nosh editorial calendar, ensuring high-quality and varied coverage.
• Managing a roster of freelance writers; assigning and editing stories; handling pitches.
• Compiling and writing core Nosh content, including neighborhood guides, eating and drinking maps, and monthly openings/closings round-ups.
• Maintaining and growing the Nosh Guide, Nosh’s curated directory of recommended places to eat and drink.
• Visiting new restaurants, bars, cafés, breweries and coffee shops on a regular basis.
• Attending selected Bay Area food events, such as festivals and conferences.
• Initiating and overseeing a new series of Nosh events to bring Nosh into the community and build its brand.
• Helping to curate the food-related programming for the Berkeleyside-produced Uncharted Berkeley Festival of Ideas, and attending the annual 2-day festival
• Being, or becoming, an authority on the East Bay dining scene.

Requirements:

• An accomplished writer and reporter with journalism experience
• Editing and copyediting skills
• A knowledge and love of food and the East Bay restaurant scene
• Excellent organizational skills
• Strong eye for photography and visual presentation
• Good photography and video skills of your own (preferable but not essential)
• Experience working in WordPress (preferable but not essential)

About Nosh: Nosh was launched in 2012 as Berkeleyside’s standalone food section covering not just Berkeley, but the whole of the East Bay. Nosh has gained a loyal readership and is held in high regard for its authoritative news and guides; recipes; food, wine, beer and coffee reporting; feature stories; and profiles of local food-related businesses and people. The Nosh Guide is our curated directory of recommended places to eat and drink in the East Bay.

About Berkeleyside: The Nosh writer/editor will work as part of the 8-person strong Berkeleyside team based at the WeWork co-working offices in downtown Berkeley. In its eighth year, Berkeleyside is still to some extent a scrappy news start-up, passionate about what we do and fueled by the enormous respect and admiration we have garnered in the community and nationwide. We work hard and enjoy ourselves and favor a collaborative, non-hierarchical, all-hands-on-deck approach.
