The Department of Communication, one of seventeen departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Communication Studies and Journalism and an M.A. in Communication Studies. The Department serves a diverse student body including approximately 700 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students with 20 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 16 full-time instructors and visiting faculty, and 6 full-time supportive professional staff. Department faculty are active in such organizations as the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the International Communication Association, the Broadcast Education Association, the National Communication Association, the Popular Culture Association, and the University Film and Video Association. The University has two public radio stations (WNIJ and WNIU) and an award-winning student-run campus newspaper (the Northern Star). Departmental facilities include the Northern Television Center (a dedicated building for news reporting and production and transmission of student-created content) and several editing suites and computer labs. The Department is affiliated with the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association and maintains an active chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.
