Position TitleDirector of Public Relations
Essential DutiesThe Director of Public Relations is responsible for coordinating an aggressive public relations program for the University that promotes the Mission-Vision-Strategic Plan to the Greater Austin Community and beyond. The Director of Public Relations will enhance the University’s image by clearly defining its various attributes and then communicating that identity consistently to its various constituent groups. The Director of Public Relations serves as the University’s primary contact with print and electronic media and will help to create a broad understanding, acceptance and support of the University in local, state, regional, national and international markets.
• To write feature news stories and press releases about the programs and accomplishments of the University on a weekly basis, and to work closely with the print and electronic editors of the Central Texas and regional print media to secure weekly coverage for the University in these publications and on these sites;
• To serve as the University’s primary contact with the print and electronic media, to coordinate appropriate and timely responses to all media inquiries about the University and the University’s response to breaking news, and to receive and escort all media personnel whenever they are on the campus;
• To work closely with the staff of the Institutional Advancement unit to accomplish the Institutional Goals and Objectives, and to implement the programs of University Development, Alumni Affairs, Major Gifts, Planned Giving, and Capital Campaign Development;
• To work with the Dean of Enrollment Management and other appropriate staff to coordinate the development of a comprehensive marketing plan, with an emphasis on student recruitment and media components that promote new students and scholarship recipients;
• To work with the Director of Information Technology and other appropriate staff to update continuously the University’s web site and other social media sites;
• To coordinate the editing and publication of all official campus publications;
• To collaborate with the Intercollegiate Athletics Department, the Director of Student Affairs, and other appropriate departments regarding public relations and marketing of campus events, including video production components;
• To work with community and business groups to assure the University’s representation at community events;
• To work with Campus Safety and Facilities Management to produce and maintain the University’s Emergency Preparedness /Crisis Management Plan;
• Provide oversight to the University’s events management process; 
• To work closely with the President/CEO and the Vice President for Institutional Advancement on special assignments to advance the University.
SUPERVISION
The Director of Public Relations reports to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
Required Qualifications• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communication required; Master’s degree in a related discipline preferred;
• Excellent interpersonal, grammar, and communication skills in oral and written presentation;
• Proficiency in word processing and other computer skills;
• Commitment to the Mission and Vision of the University; to the executive leadership of the President; and to the effective discharge of the duties and responsibilities of the position.
