Texas Christian University Chair Journalism Department
The Bob Schieffer College of Communication at TCU seeks a dynamic, thoughtful, well-respected leader to serve as chair of the Journalism Department.
The department chair is a nine-month position at a rank commensurate with the candidate’s accomplishments in the field of journalism education and scholarship. The chair is the executive officer of the department, providing vision and representing the program both on campus and in the community. Duties include budget preparation, course schedule management, handling promotion and tenure cases, and reviewing performance of faculty and staff.
Candidates must have a terminal degree in journalism or a related field with a record of excellent scholarship, teaching and research to have earned promotion to the rank of associate or full professor. Previous academic administration and leadership experience is strongly preferred.
Candidates should have a strong commitment to attracting, supporting, and advocating for a diverse faculty, staff, and student body. Ideal candidates will have professional experience and should demonstrate their understanding of the importance of journalism education in the digital age.
TCU is situated in a top-five U.S. media market, and the journalism department has long-time relationships with media outlets throughout the region. Graduates have a strong record of advancing into professional careers in journalism and other communication fields.
The Journalism Department offers Bachelor of Arts degree that emphasizes understanding the importance of diversity, ethics and media literacy in our field, developing core reporting and storytelling skills, and production of journalism across multimedia platforms.
The department produces award-winning student media such as tcu360.com, the Skiff newspaper, TCU NewsNow and SportsNow broadcasts, Image magazine, and the109.org. The department is also home to the Texas Center for Community Journalism, which serves journalists throughout the state with training, workshops, and publication of a research journal.
The Journalism Department was founded in 1927 and is accredited by ACEJMC.
The Bob Schieffer College of Communication
The college, which is named for TCU alumnus and longtime CBS network TV correspondent Bob Schieffer, is the academic home for about 1,000 undergraduate students majoring in four departments (Communication Studies; Film, Television and Digital Media; Journalism; and Strategic Communication). More than 30 graduate students pursue master’s degrees in Communication Studies and Strategic Communication, and about 50 full-time and 25 part-time faculty teach in the college. The college’s award-winning student activities include print, video and digital news media, a forensics and debate team, an advertising and public relations agency, a radio station and sports broadcasting productions. The college also offers a vibrant array of study abroad courses taught by its faculty.

The metro area has been named No. 2 in the country for job growth by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and named fifth best city in the country to buy a home. Fort Worth boasts “the best downtown in America,” according to Liveability.com, and is home to three world-class art museums, a premier performance facility, green spaces and public art.
