Launched in 2013 by eBay founder and philanthropist Pierre Omidyar, First Look Media is a new-model media company that will be a platform for the world’s leading independent voices, ranging from fearless investigative journalism and documentary filmmaking to arts, culture, media and entertainment.
Underlying all of what First Look does is the belief that independent perspectives are vital to both a vibrant culture and a thriving democracy, and that left solely to the dictates of the marketplace, consumers will get an increasingly narrow and factionalized set of viewpoints that won't fully represent our society, encourage healthy debate, or spur new ideas and innovation.
FLM also believes that technology is an increasingly essential tool for creators to produce and distribute content, cultivate a relationship with their audience, and generate real impact.
First Look Media has several existing media platforms and is creating others.
The Intercept, founded by journalist and author Glenn Greenwald, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist and filmmaker Jeremy Scahill, is a digital publisher dedicated to the outspoken defense of the First Amendment through investigative journalism. Initially notable for reporting based on disclosures made by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, The Intercept, under Editor-in-Chief Betsy Reed, has expanded its focus to investigative reporting around institutional corruption in government and beyond. Poitras, who won the Academy Award for her documentary CitizenFour, about Snowden’s decision to go public, will contribute to The Intercept’s growing documentary efforts as both an executive producer and filmmaker.
FLM is also home to reported.ly, a real-time news initiative led by long-time digital journalism innovator Andy Carvin. Launched in December 2014, reported.ly is focused on global news delivered and curated primarily through social media, and on building online communities around global issues through a collaborative journalism.
First Look Media is creating more media properties focused on connecting compelling independent voices with passionate audiences, and to encourage experimentation with storytelling formats and approaches. Content will cover a wide spectrum, including arts & culture, media & entertainment, and critical perspectives on news and current events. And because impact for audiences is at our core, First Look will produce content for all screens and platforms, including the web and digital, online video, TV, feature films, episodic programming, audio storytelling/podcasts, long-form journalism, as well as technologies to help creators and audiences develop, distribute, discover and connect with meaningful stories.
