The mission of the Land Trust Alliance is to save the places people love by strengthening land conservation across America.
Land trusts are independent nonprofit organizations dedicated to conserving natural and agricultural lands for the public benefit. They range from large national groups to organizations of all sizes that work locally in their town, county, region, or state. Their work preserves natural areas, family farms and ranches, community gardens, and parks and trails to provide for clean air and water, fresh food, outdoor recreation, healthy ecosystems and habitats, flood defense, climate resiliency, strong economies, and to connect us to America’s heritage and the wonders of our natural world.
The Land Trust Alliance is the only national organization dedicated to ensuring that land trusts are successful in this critical mission. Since land trusts founded the national Alliance in 1982, and with our guidance and support, the land trust community has grown from fewer than 500 isolated organizations to a connected network of 1,700 groups that have protected more than 47 million acres. The Alliance leads this community, serving its more than 12,000 staff and 15,600 board members. We provide the following core programs to advance land trusts and land conservation: education and training; policy advocacy; capacity-building and other direct services; conservation defense; and new initiatives that promote the practice of community conservation and strategic communications. The Land Trust Alliance has a 22-member Board of Directors, a staff of 60, and a strong volunteer force of more than 400 conservation experts
