Company Description:

Applications for the 2023-2024 Philanthropy & Nonprofit Accountability Fellowship are open.

The fellowship, which runs from March 2023 to February 2024, is offered by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, an independent news organization that covers nonprofits, foundations, and others involved in advancing the social good. This fellowship is part of  a collaboration with the Associated Press and the Conversation designed to shed light on one of the most under covered — but crucial — sectors of American life.

Our goal is to give news organizations access to the tools and training they need to write powerful stories that attract and engage more of their readers and to expand their accountability and solutions-focused journalism in covering philanthropy, nonprofits, and charities, both during the fellowship and over the long haul.

Through this one-year fellowship, journalists at local, regional, and nonprofit news organizations will have the opportunity to work with the Chronicle of Philanthropy — while staying in their community — to develop and publish articles about the people and organizations in their regions or coverage areas that are trying to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.

The newsrooms selected will each receive a $15,000 stipend to subsidize the work of reporters and editors on projects for publication at their own organizations and in the Chronicle. They will also work with and learn from editors and reporters who are part of our philanthropy partnership at the Associated Press and the Conversation and with national experts who can help them improve their journalism.

We are encouraging newsrooms to submit proposals for stories and projects that:

  • Advance the understanding of nonprofits and charitable giving among citizens, entrepreneurs, business executives, government officials, policy makers, and others.
  • Examine whether charities and foundations are making a difference (or not) on important problems facing the communities news organizations serve.
  • Deepen the conversation about nonprofits in civic life.
  • Build understanding about the importance and inner workings of philanthropic giving.
  • Expand the national conversation about philanthropy and its role and influence.

To apply:

We’re asking teams of at least one editor and one reporter from news organizations to apply by January 6, 2023. Fellowship winners will be selected and notified by February 1, 2023.

Send an email to: philanthropyfellowship@philanthropy.com

Explain what your news organization hopes to accomplish and learn during the fellowship. Include the name and title of the lead editor and the name and title of the reporter or reporters who will be part of the fellowship team.

Please attach the following to the email:

  • A proposal of no more than 500 words detailing what makes your project newsworthy, its potential impact on your readers, and a timeline. The pitch doesn’t need to be polished but should reflect some of the goals of the fellowship as outlined. We encourage projects that include several stories over the course of the fellowship year as opposed to one big story.
  • PDFs of three stories by proposed team members that showcase accountability, solution-focused, or in-depth explanatory reporting.
  • A letter of support signed by the news organization’s top editor indicating approval of the fellowship if selected. Selected news organizations will be required to sign a memorandum of understanding.
