Isthmus is a 46-year-old media organization that serves the Madison, Wisconsin, community by providing independent and trusted local journalism in a printed newspaper and online at isthmus.com. We focus on investigations, in-depth news and informed coverage of the arts and culture.
Founded in 1976 as an alternative weekly newspaper, Isthmus grew into a Madison institution and a successful small business. The COVID-19 pandemic proved to be an insurmountable challenge and Isthmus’ owners ceased publication in the spring of 2020. But a small, talented staff rebooted the paper as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2021. Some digital advertising revenue and a growing reader donation program allowed the organization to begin paying staff in July 2021 and the printed newspaper returned on a monthly basis in August 2021
