At Western Michigan University, we celebrate the passions that drive students and the possibilities that inspire them. For us, a degree is a pursuit of purpose where students are empowered to learn and where an experience-driven education leads to a meaningful career. WMU students make their mark on the world—Grammy recipients, Super Bowl champions, doctors, teachers, pilots and countless others have flourished here. Western is the place where students become the best version of themselves.
Founded in 1903, the University today offers its nearly 18,000 students a diverse range of majors and nationally ranked programs. Students are well prepared in classrooms with the intellectual skills employers want, and they gain valuable career-ready competencies through internships and other forms of experiential learning at businesses and organizations across the state and nation. In 2025, TIME ranked Western as one of the country’s top 125 colleges for future leaders and top four in Michigan.
Western is one of only 119 national institutions, 15 doctoral-granting universities and the third in Michigan to receive a “high research activity” designation. In addition, U.S. News & World Report has named WMU among the country’s best national universities since 1991.
Home to a thriving undergraduate honors college, WMU is one of four public universities in Michigan to be granted its own chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most widely recognized academic honor society in the nation. Just 107 other public universities in the country have been selected to shelter a chapter.
WMU has created an environment designed to help students thrive academically, emotionally and physically as they pursue their purpose. The University's focus on well-being supports holistic success, empowering students to craft a life of meaning and fulfillment.
